Definition — CMDB basics: why reliable configuration data matters

What it is, why it matters

A configuration database helps when its records, owners and relationships reflect your real services.

More than an inventory

A CMDB stores configuration items, called CIs, and relationships. A server record alone says little about a customer application. Links to services, databases and owners make it useful when investigating incidents or assessing changes.

Example: one server, two records

An import and a discovery job may describe the same server differently. Duplicates split its history. Agree on identifiers and authoritative sources, then reconcile incoming data rather than letting each integration create records freely.

Maintain quality over time

Start with records needed for a real support process. Assign owners, check required fields and review stale entries. Test usefulness: can support find the owner and dependencies of the service that just failed?

In short : A maintained, focused CMDB is more useful than untrusted data at scale.
