Training & learning — Modular monolith or microservices: how to choose

How to learn it, step by step

Choose architecture around team size, deployment needs and operational capacity rather than fashion.

Learning path

  1. One app can have clear boundaries

A modular monolith deploys as one application but separates customers, orders and billing in code. This can suit a small product team: deployment stays simple while modules clarify business responsibilities.

  2. Microservices add operational work

Independent services can deploy and scale separately. They also add network failures, distributed tracing and consistency challenges. If an order succeeds but payment fails, recovery needs design. More repositories alone do not create independent business services.

  3. Decide from a real requirement

Does one feature need its own release cycle, scaling pattern or owning team? If not, improve modularity first. Document decisions and test boundaries so extraction remains possible when the product actually needs it.

What you will master : Choose the simplest architecture that meets real deployment and ownership needs.
